Repaired and back in its home

A customer and antiques collector in The Dales had a couple of items that needed minor restoration.

A gilded mirror had some decorative pieces missing and otherwise needed a clean up. Two rustic chairs had various spindles come out of place and one had a loose leg and some damage to the back brace

I made new pieces for the mirror from 6mm dowel formed to shape and retouched to match the original.  For the chairs I reset the spindles and leg and used epoxy filler to rebuild two small broken sections of the brace. One of the legs was too short so I added a new wooden piece on the end, sanded it to shape, coloured and waxed it to match the original.

After a good clean and a wax for the chairs all were returned to the owner strong and retaining their antique patina

The mirror was dirty and had some decorative sections missing

I made new insets from 6mm dowel flattened on one edge and glued them into position with wood glue

The new pieces were painted in acrylic and retouched to match the original colour and patina

After minimal restoration the cleaned up piece retained its antique look

The chairs had various historical damage. Here a jagged broken and missing piece had to be reformed with epoxy wood filler before colour matching and rewaxing

Likewise on the other side a crack and weak point had to be strengthened using the same method

One of the legs was shorter than the rest making the chair unstable. I added a new wooden disc at its base, sanded to a sympathetic shape and recoloured

The chair was asymmetrical to start with but at least now sits stable. Lovely grained elm seat

The second chair with the repairs to the back is now strong and functional again.
